BEACH SAFE No, not a federal gov’t intiative – its a project by Gregor Schneider . The Goethe Institute refers to it as : “A freestanding site-specific artwork entitled Bondi Beach will be erected at Bondi Beach. It will comprise 21 identical cells constructed of typical Australian fencing and will be open for viewers to utilise and explore. It will offer its guests amenities such as air mattresses and beach umbrellas.”
Schneider’s has worked for the last 5 years with issues of anxieties of the west – and now brought to the heart of narcissistic leisure – Bondi. Bring to mind when Furedi said: “Today’s ‘global war (on terror)’ is in no way similar to an isolated conflict between two nations but rather stays suspended in a permanent possibility of becoming. The threat of ‘terrorism’ and the concomitant manipulation of fear have penetrated every segment of society.”
